Artificial Pier Construction Begins in Gaza to Facilitate Aid Delivery

American forces have begun construction of a pier off the coast of Gaza, designed to facilitate and expedite the flow of humanitarian aid. In March, US President Joe Biden announced the construction of this temporary structure. Israel’s military campaign against Hamas has lasted for more than six months, causing a real humanitarian disaster for the 2.3 million residents of Gaza.

According to Reuters reports, there are doubts that this logistical solution could significantly alter the pace at which food and medicine are delivered to a population severely affected by months of bombing and starvation.

Aid delivered to the pier will have to pass through Israeli crossings on land, although pre-checking takes place in Cyprus, from where the cargo will head to Gaza. This way, help can arrive in the sector faster than it does now, but then slow down again.

In the initial phase, the pier will provide daily access for 90 trucks with humanitarian aid, then the number will increase to 150. Currently, according to the UN, about 200 truckloads of humanitarian aid enter the sector every day. The UN emphasizes the difficulties and slowness of supply, as too much time elapses between the arrival of goods and their distribution to the population.
