BRICS, Inventory of New Members

It is a hot summer for the BRICS countries who are pushing for an alternative currency to the dollar for international transactions and who will be in South Africa, in Johannesburg, from August 22 to 24, for a summit where this aspect will be one of the central points.

In the meantime, from July 4 to 6, a preliminary meeting will be held with the participation of some officials of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, China, India, and South Africa), which will determine the main directions for future entry into the partnership. The preliminary document to be prepared these days will then be discussed at the August meeting with the participation of heads of state.

Membership applications have surged in recent months, with the latest coming from Ethiopia, the second most populous country in Africa (121 million inhabitants) after Nigeria.

Currently, 19 countries have expressed their interest in joining BRICS, 13 officially and 6 informally.
