Non-governmental organizations operating in the Gaza Strip will be able to take advantage of the satellite Internet connection provided by Starlink.
This was stated personally by Elon Musk, the owner of the service: “Starlink will support communication for internationally recognized humanitarian organizations in the Gaza Strip,” he wrote in response to a tweet from Democratic representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The US politician said that leaving a population of 2 million people without the ability to communicate is unacceptable.
On October 28, following the intensification of the Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip, telephone lines and the Internet were cut off, making any kind of communication impossible for the Gaza population, both within the territory and with the outside world.
According to Deborah Brown of Human Rights Watch, as reported by the online newspaper Open, “This blackout risks providing cover for mass atrocities and promoting impunity for human rights violations.”
Starlink is a SpaceX service, a “constellation” of satellites capable of providing Internet connectivity anywhere in the world.
