South Korea: Yoon Suk-Yeol’s Trial Begins January 14

But the deposed president will not attend “for security reasons”

The impeachment trial of ousted South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol will begin on Tuesday, January 14. This will be the first of five hearings scheduled by the Constitutional Court before February 4, which will also be held without the presence of the defendant.

After resisting the original arrest warrant, obtained thanks to protesters and the Presidential Guard, and refusing to be questioned about the failed attempt to impose martial law on December 3, 2024, now Yoon will not even attend the first hearing.

The ousted president’s lawyer, Yoon Kab-keun, made the announcement, citing his client’s personal security concerns. “There were concerns about security and possible riots. Therefore, the president will not be able to attend the January 14 court session,” the lawyer explained, adding that once these security issues are resolved, “the president is ready to appear at any time.” Yoon is facing “sedition” charges and could even face the death penalty if convicted.
