International dialogue concerning the risks associated with the spread of artificial intelligence is what will be discussed this week in the United Nations Security Council.
The Council led by James Cleverly, British Foreign Secretary, will hold the first formal debate on the topic of international dialogue and cooperation in light of the possible impact of AI on global security.
Last month, Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, spoke about the possibility of founding an international body to manage artificial intelligence, similar to how the IAEA manages nuclear energy.
“Artificial intelligence brings huge benefits in the digital age, but it can also substantially compromise security and significantly affect the user activities around the world,” says the note from the United Nations.
“More multilateral efforts in AI cooperation are needed to help build global capacity for developing and using AI reliably, based on human rights, safely and sustainably, contributing to establishing peace.”
