United Arab Emirates: Hamas Must Resign from Gaza Administration

This is the common position of the countries of the Arab League

The important position of the United Arab Emirates on the future of Palestine and particularly the Gaza Strip. Anwar Gargash (pictured), international affairs adviser to United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said that “the Palestinian Islamist armed movement Hamas must withdraw from the governance of the Gaza Strip.”

In a post on X social media, Gargash characterized the call “for Hamas to withdraw from the governance of Gaza” made by Ahmed Aboul Gheit, secretary-general of the Arab League, “absolutely correct.”

According to the Emirati diplomatic adviser, “the interests of the Palestinian people must prevail over the interests of the (Hamas) movement, especially in light of the demands for the evacuation of Palestinians from Gaza and the war caused by its decisions that destroyed the Gaza Strip and tore apart its human and social structure.”

Aboul Gheit had earlier said in an interview with Saudi TV channel Al Arabiya that “it is in the Palestinian interest for Hamas to step down,” a position shared by the Arab League’s most influential countries.

In this context, the Abu Dhabi press recalls that “the United Arab Emirates was one of the first Arab countries to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020, after Egypt (1979) and Jordan (1994), with the signing of the Abraham Accords brokered by US President Donald Trump during his first term (2016-2020).”

As the situation in the region has escalated since October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, the United Arab Emirates continues to provide humanitarian support to the people of Gaza and Lebanon, who have been particularly hard hit by the war. “Since the beginning of the conflict,” Anwar Gargash finally emphasized, “the United Arab Emirates has reaffirmed the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and has repeatedly called on the international community to exert all possible efforts for a two-state solution, in particular an independent State of Palestine.”
