It will include those who register to vote in swing states and sign a petition in favor of Trump
Elon Musk is becoming increasingly active in the US presidential election. Known for his support of Republican candidate Donald Trump, the South African-born billionaire has decided to set up a lottery of sorts, targeting registered voters who sign a petition circulated by his organization, America PAC.
Each day a million dollars is drawn to be won among those who sign the America PAC petition, created “to protect free speech and the right to gun ownership.” According to Musk, the goal is to “make sure everybody in key states is informed, and I think this will make sure they’re informed,” he explained on X. Most believe this is actually a ploy to increase the number of people willing to register to vote, thereby increasing turnout, which will go in favor of Republicans. In this way, Musk hopes to “attract one million registered voters” in key states, namely Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Carolina.
Many observers believe the move would not be legal, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro; the Democratic Party member said he has “serious doubts” about the legality of Musk’s initiatives. The plural stems from the fact that America PAC is also offering $100 to voters who choose to sign the petition in Pennsylvania, and about half that amount in other states. “Obviously Musk has a right to express his opinion, he’s made it very, very clear that he supports Trump, I’m not denying him that right, but when you start flooding politics with that amount of money, I think there are serious problems, it should be investigated,” Shapiro commented.
