Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, announced the launch of a formal investigation with the aim to open impeachment proceedings against President Joe Biden.
“This is not a decision taken lightly,” McCarthy explained. “These facts should alarm all Americans.” The President “lied to the American people about his family’s foreign affairs; the presidency is not for sale.”
The issue centers on crimes committed by the US president’s son, Hunter Biden, who is under investigation in Delaware for tax fraud and failure to declare income from foreign governments.
The Republicans’ goal is to demonstrate that Joe Biden was involved in and benefited from his son’s illegal activities. At this point, the president has not made his position clear, which is possible because Hunter is under criminal investigation. The launch of a formal investigation by congressmen will change the cards on the table.
Republicans have a majority in the US House of Representatives. But according to information from American sources, the 218 votes required to succeed may not be collected. If Republicans in the Lower House manage to rally their ranks, then the matter will go to the Senate for consideration. The senate has a democratic majority, and approval of the document will require 2/3 of senators’ votes.
