THE TIMES OF INDIA: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday warned that if Ukrainian armed forces were permitted to attack Russian territory using Western-made long-range missiles it would mean the West’s direct involvement in the conflict, altering its nature and scope. In his most assertive remarks on the issue to date, Putin said that such a decision would inevitably draw the countries supplying long-range missiles to Kyiv into the war. He explained that Nato military personnel would need to provide satellite targeting data and program the missiles' flight paths, as Kyiv lacks the necessary capabilities.

THE GUARDIAN (GB): Keir Starmer has told Vladimir Putin that he started the war in Ukraine and could end it at any time after the Russian leader warned that any use of long-range British missiles into Russian territory would put Nato at war with his country. The prime minister spoke en route to Washington to see US president Joe Biden as he sought to justify a western decision made behind closed doors that would allow Ukraine to attack inside Russia with partly British-made Storm Shadow missiles. Responding directly to threats earlier by the Russian president, Starmer told reporters: “Russia started this conflict. Russia illegally invaded Ukraine. Russia can end this conflict straight away. Ukraine has the right to self-defence”. A day earlier, the Guardian revealed that the US and UK had agreed, in conjunction with other allies, to allow Ukraine to strike military targets inside Russia with Storm Shadow missiles, which have a range of at least 190 miles, a longstanding demand of Kyiv’s.

THE NEW YORK TIMES (USA): President Biden appears on the verge of clearing the way for Ukraine to launch long-range Western weapons deep inside Russian territory, as long as it doesn’t use arms provided by the United States, European officials say. The issue, which has long been debated in the administration, is coming to a head on Friday with the first official visit to the White House by Britain’s new prime minister, Keir Starmer. Britain has already signaled to the United States that it is eager to let Ukraine use its “Storm Shadow” long-range missiles to strike at Russian military targets far from the Ukrainian border. But it wants explicit permission from Mr. Biden in order to demonstrate a coordinated strategy with the United States and France, which makes a similar missile. American officials say Mr. Biden has not made a decision, but will hear from Mr. Starmer on Friday. If the president approves, the move could help Ukraine hold the line after it seizes Russian territory, as it did during its surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region. But Mr. Biden has hesitated to allow Ukraine to use American weapons in the same way, particularly after warnings from American intelligence agencies that Russia could respond by aiding Iran in targeting American forces in the Middle East.

GLOBAL TIMES (CHINA): US, UK “want war”, continue to fan the flames of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The actions of the US and UK to fan the flames of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict have further accelerated and intensified. On one hand, they discourage peace negotiations, and on the other, they exacerbate the escalation of the conflict, with Ukraine ultimately bearing the greatest cost. Regrettably, amid Western allies’ belief that the conflict is entering a “critical moment”, this rare joint visit still does not aim to bring peace. Experts suggest that this visit reflects a clear political posture of the US and UK. The two want to ensure that Ukraine adopts a hardline, uncompromising position and to exhaust Russia militarily through Western aid to Ukraine. For the US and UK, peace talks are not even an option. Their real intention is to fan the flames of war, ensuring that Ukraine continues to serve as a pawn in this protracted conflict.

THE WASHINGTON POST (USA): America first? Or the United States as the leader of the free world? The debate of the 1940s deserves a new airing in this year’s election. Eighty-four years ago, America experienced a presidential election campaign that was historic in two regards. Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940 was trying to break the unwritten ban on third terms that dated to George Washington. And the central issue of the campaign was whether the United States should set aside a century and a half of diffidence and seize the leading role in world affairs. The election of 1940 produced a first great debate over America’s world role. The election of 2024 contains another. The Republican ticket, headed by the man who revived the “America First” label from the antiwar committee for which Lindbergh spoke, describes a very different vision from the one espoused by the Democratic heirs of Roosevelt.

THE ECONOMIC TIMES (INDIA): India and Russia maintain effective and trust-based relations, highlighted by regular contact between their leaders. Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu emphasized the importance of this partnership during a meeting with Indian counterpart Ajit Doval in St. Petersburg. The meeting reviewed bilateral cooperation and discussed mutual interests. Shoigu appreciated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose Russia for his first foreign visit in his third term, reflecting strong ties between the nations. The meeting between Shoigu and Doval took place on the sidelines of a BRICS and BRICS+ high-level representatives meeting in St. Petersburg. Moscow especially appreciates that Russia was chosen as the destination for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first bilateral foreign visit in his third term, Shoigu noted. Doval’s visit to Russia coincided with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar’s trip to Germany, where he indicated that direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are inevitable to end the ongoing conflict, and that India is ready to play a role in facilitating this process. He however said that New Delhi would not necessarily mediate the talks.

NIKKEI (JAPAN): German warships set to sail through Taiwan Strait: sources. Beijing says move would be a 'provocation' while analysts warn of confrontation. Two German warships docked in South Korea are set to sail through the Taiwan Strait over the next few days, sources told Nikkei Asia, as Berlin risks angering Beijing with a move it has not taken in more than two decades. China's expansionist actions in recent years have prompted Western powers to assert their presence in the Indo-Pacific to protect allies and maintain the rules-based international order. The U.S., France, the U.K. and other allies have sailed through the Taiwan Strait as part of freedom-of-navigation exercises.

HAARETZ (ISRAEL): Commando raid in Syria shows how the war’s epicenter is shifting from Gaza to Northern Israel. Gallant’s assessment that Hamas is finished as a military organization is not far from the truth, but also signifies a change in the war’s direction.

DAILY SABAH (TURKEY): Questions arose after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan last week called for the creation of an Islamic alliance for Gaza against Israel’s “expansionism”, with critics wondering what such an alliance’s framework could be and whether it is possible in the first place. To answer why, there are actually two major developments concerning Ankara. The first is the ongoing threat of regional escalation, which would affect regional stability and trade. The other one is the killing of a Turkish American woman by Israeli troops in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. In fact, the call for this alliance must be read as a continuation of the policy that Türkiye has been pursuing since the start of the war. Within this period, Ankara has undertaken and proposed several initiatives, such as a guarantorship model for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or leading a Gaza contact group, which visited diverse capitals around the globe to raise awareness and discuss the situation. Most recently, Erdoğan also called for a summit of Muslim country leaders to discuss the Gaza war, and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan addressed the issue during his participation in the Arab League meeting.

THE ASAHI SHIMBUN (JAPAN): Former defense minister Shigeru Ishiba is corporate Japan’s top choice to replace Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, edging out Sanae Takaichi, who strives to become the nation’s first female premier, a Reuters survey showed on Thursday. About 24% of respondents named Ishiba as the most desirable candidate, compared with 22% for Economic Security Minister Takaichi and 16% for Shinjiro Koizumi, the 43-year-old son of former premier Junichiro Koizumi.

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL (USA): Chinese cargo cranes used at U.S. seaports around the country have embedded technology that could allow Beijing to covertly gain access to the machines, making them vulnerable to espionage and disruption, according to a yearlong congressional investigation. The probe, conducted jointly by the Republican majorities of the House Homeland Security Committee and Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, found that the China-based manufacturer of the cranes, ZPMC, had at times pressured port operators to allow the company to maintain remote access.

THE WASHINGTON TIMES (USA): The Pentagon has burgeoning initiatives to validate scientific discoveries and begin testing applications as it braces for a breakthrough to accelerate the arrival of revolutionary quantum computers. Quantum computers pose significant risks and enormous opportunities for national security. The emergence of a “cryptanalytically relevant” quantum computer threatens to crack the encryption systems that secure defense secrets and everyday financial transactions. The Defense Department’s primary objective for quantum computing is to understand its uses and prevent the power of the machines from falling into the hands of an adversary, said John Burke, the Pentagon’s principal director of quantum science.

SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST (HONG KONG, CHINA): China sets some global standards for 6G tech as it looks towards next-gen communications. Proposed standards intended to aid different 6G requirements, such as the need to send secure content and keep data up to date. China has established three pivotal 6G technological standards under the auspices of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), marking a significant advance in setting the international framework for next-gen telecommunications. The new standards are tailored to enhance scenarios outlined in the union’s international mobile telecommunications 2030 framework: communications that are immersive, ultra-reliable low-latency and AI integrated.

AL-AHRAM (EGYPT): The century-long battle over the return of the bust of the ancient Egyptian Queen Nefertiti from Germany to its homeland is continuing. In the North Dome Room of the Neues Museum in Berlin stands the magnificent painted stucco and limestone bust of the ancient Egyptian Queen Nefertiti that continues to draw the attention of thousands of visitors. Earlier this week during a seminar at the Nefertiti Cultural Salon in the Prince Taz Palace in Historic Cairo, egyptologist and former Minister of Antiquities Zahi Hawass revived the initiative to repatriate the 3,400-year-old bust of Queen Nefertiti and launched an international petition calling for the return of the bust to its homeland. The petition was published on Sunday on change.org and Hawass’s personal Website and Instagram accounts and calls on people to sign it in a step towards taking more steps to repatriate the bust. Egypt has now been deprived of the bust for 102 years. It has never been sent back to Egypt on loan, even as it changed homes in Germany and despite the context of two World Wars.
